Distribution and Bioremediation of PAHs Among Different Particle Classes Found in a Contaminated Surface Soil
PAHs, as high as 1000 ppm, contaminate an industry site in Texas. The Industrial Remedial Standard (IRS), set by the Texas Risk Reduction Program (TRRP), is 2.4 ppm for benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), the governing contaminant of concern found there. Bioremediation studies of the PAH-impacted soil were conducted in five reactors evaluating natural attenuation, biostimulation, and bioaugmentation. We found that biostimulation with addition of surfactant performed best during the four month bench study, having reduced BaP by 61% with a biodegradation rate (k) of 0.2346 month-1. This suggests that surfactant-enhanced biostimulation represents a better bioremediation option than natural attenuation alone, biostimulation without surfactant, and bioaugmentation, with or without an added surfactant. Additionally, we found that the contaminated soil consisted of two main geosorbents – white mineral-based particles and black carbon-based particles. Most of the PAHs were sorbed to the black particles, with concentrations generally two orders of magnitude higher when determined by EPA Method 3540. Petrography analyses and reflectance FTIR indicted that the black particles consisted of pyrolyzed tire rubber, elements of coal, and oxidized modern plant material. Although the black particles represent a sink and possible origin for the high levels of PAHs, synthetic precipitation leaching procedures (SPLP) indicated the PAHs are relatively unavailable under natural conditions.
