Experimental Research on Geotechincal Properties of Compacted Clay Liner Influenced by Leachate

Due to the complex chemical and biological nature of leachate in sanitary landfill, there is potential for changing constituent and pore structure of clay liner, thereby, inducing the geotechnical properties alterance of clay. By means of laboratory experiments, leachate seeping though compacted clay in 540 days, plasticity and permeability and their changing regulation of compacted clay liner in waste sanitary landfill were deeply studied.The researches show the following: Plasticity index of the soil mass after leachate seeping saturation is remarkably larger than that of the original soil mass, but its permeability coefficient shows an invers trend , that is, clay permeability coefficient by leachate seepage is lower than that of the original; Furthermore, permeability coefficient further decreased and plasticity index further increased with leachate seeping goes on during the 540 days of test time; Increase of polar water molecular number adsorbed by the soil mass is the main reason that plasticity index is enhanced by leachate; And other functions, including insoluble carbonates generating, organic material adsorbing, soluble mineral transformed into insoluble matter and microorganisms propagation, simultaneously act on decreasing clay permeability coefficient.
