Stability of engineered domains in ferroelectric LiNbO3 and LiTaO3 crystals

The stability of engineered domains in LiNbO3 (LN) and LiTaO3 (LT) both in near-stoichiometric and congruent composition was investigated using scanning probe microscopy (SPM). Subsequent piezoresponse images showed that the stability of the domains engineered in LN and LT were strongly related to the nonstoichiometric defects in the crystals. In the near-stoichiometric LN, the shape of the linear domains engineered at an angle to the crystallographic Y-axis changed due to wall movements during SPM scanning. However, in the congruent LN, there was no change in the shape of the linear domains. In the near-stoichiometric LT (SLT), backswitching was observed in the engineered domains induced by the heat treatment and that the wall movements corresponding to the back-switching depended on the domain structure and heating temperature. No backswitching was observed in the congruent LT after the same heat treatment. The thermal stability of engineered domains in the near-SLT could be characterized by the effects of domain wall energy and surface electrostatic energy.
