ELASTIC-PLASTIC FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS OF FATIGUE CRACK TIP PLASTICITY AND CORRELATION OF FATIGUE CRACK PROPAGATION RATES UNDER TENSION-COMPRESSION LOADING
Elastic-plastic finite element analysis has been performed in order to obtain the fatigue crack tip parameters under tension-compression loading. The crack tip plastic zone size, reverse plastic zone size, crack tip opening displacement have been obtained. These results show that the compressive loading part of the fatigue load cycle has a significant effect on these crack tip parameters and therefore has a strong effect on fatigue crack growth rate under tensioncompression loading. The obtained parameters from finite element analysis have been used to correlate the experimental obtained fatigue crack propagation rate, and good agreement has been obtained.
