SWANGREMAINING FATIGUE LIFE AND SERVICE SAFETY ASSESSMENT FOR STEEL BRIDGES: METHODS AND APPLICATION
Based on investigation of linear fatigue-damage accumulation theory and fracture mechanics, the deterministic assessment approach was proposed, in which the fatigue failure behavior of existing steel bridges was reflected. According to the stochastic fatigue failure mechanism of existing steel bridges, a probabilistic fracture failure model for members and a systems fatigue reliability assessment model were proposed. Furthermore, based on Monte-Carlo method, a fatigue reliability analysis program was developed to calculate members and system fatigue failure probability of existing steel bridges. The deterministic and probabilistic assessment methods proposed in this paper were applied to evaluate the remaining fatigue life and service safety of an existing railway steel bridge. According to assessment results, the deterministic and probabilistic remaining fatigue life, safe inspection intervals and maintenance strategy are determined, which can control and avoid fatigue failure accident and reduce the contingent disaster in bridge service life.
