FATIGUE ASSESSMENT OF WELDED TUBULAR STEEL STRUCTURES DETAILS BY USING FEM

Fatigue failures typically begin at high stress concentration locations, at weld terminations of specific structural details. Welded steel structures design can involve very complex details. Due to the complexity of the details, the simplified methodologies of codes cannot be used directly in the fatigue design and Finite Element Method analyses have to be used.. The limitations of the classical S-N fatigue analysis used in current codes of practice and in particular the uncertainty in the characterization of the loading on the structure are discussed.
