ROCK TENSILE STRENGTH TEST USING DISC TYPE SAMPLES -AN INVESTIGATION ON SUB-SIZEDSPECIMENS THIS
Estimation of rock tensile strength is an important task in many rock related projects. In this paper the indirect tensile strength of a rock material is obtained by means of two disc type samples namely the well known Brazilian disc specimen and a new suggested specimen semi-disc specimen under three point bend loading. First, finite element analyses are employed to derive a general 3-D formulation for obtaining the tensile strength of each sample. Then a series of tensile tests are conducted on a white marble using both samples and for various thicknesses. The obtained results show that the tensile strength is decreased by increasing the specimen thickness. Meanwhile, a good agreement existing between the results of two specimens suggests that the semi disc specimen can also be used for obtaining the rock tensile strength in addition to the conventional Brazilian test.
