An overview on aquaculture and environmental health: with emphasis on bioaccumulation of mercury

Due to the rapid socuo-economic development in the Pearl River Delta during the last three decades, the discharge of pollutants due to human activities has become an environmental and human health concern. This article attempts to review the (1) recent status of environmental pollution, with emphasis on mercury (Hg) and other toxic metals in the region; (2) potential transfer of these toxic metals through bioaccumulation and biomagnification in the aquatic food chains; and (3) potential health hazards through consumption of contaminated fish.
