Behavior of reare earth elements (REE) in model soil systems

The effect of Rhodopseudomonas pallustris bacterium on the sorption of rare earth elements (REE) by quartz and goethite at different pHs values was studied. pH of sorption solution seems to be the most important parameter in the interaction between metal ions and surfaces of biological and mineral sorbents. Sorption of REE by quartz was significant only above pH 9; however in the presence of the bacterium sorption of REE by quartz occurred above pH7. In spite of same chemical properties of lanthanides there were differences in their sorption by quartz at alkaline conditions. In the case of quartz, microorganisms increased non-exchangeable form of elements at pH7, and both exchangeable and non- exchangeable forms at pH9. Sorption of REE by goethite with compare by quartz rised at pH7 and 9. Microorganisms decreased the sorption of lanthanides by a-FeOOH at alkaline pH which is attributed to the reduction in their exchangeable forms.
