Environmental quality of small-scale vegetable farming systems in peri-urban areas of Shanghai, China
Impacted by the rapid urbanization, many small-scale vegetable-growing soils in the peri-urban areas of Shanghai are exposed to anthropogenic heavy metals, which pose threat to vegetables safety and human health. We monitored the heavy metal concentrations in small-scale vegetable soils in Baoshan District of Shanghai, and observed that the concentrations of Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, Ni and Cr in these soils were significantly higher than the background levels.
