Assessment of priority metal pollutants in animal manure used for land application

Two hundreds and sixty manure samples were collected from pig, dairy, chicken and goat farms in Beijing and Fuxin to analyze the concentrations of Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Pb, Cr and Ni. The survey found the highest mean values of metal concentrations in pig manure and the lowest concentrations in dairy manure The excessive amounts of Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Pb, and Cr varied in different manure samples. All the over- limit samples for Cu, Cr, and As were detected in pig group. Sixty samples from four types of manures were found to contain Cd exceeding the standard for land use purposes. The results suggested that more attention should be paid to pig manure and the toxic metals of Cd, Cu and As. Cadmium, Cu and As could be considered as the priority pollutants for assessment of manure land application.
