Heavy metals in soils and vegetables in peri-urban of Nanjing

Soil and vegetable, samples were collected in Nanjing peri-urban area. Some heavy metals were determined. Results indicated soils ambient Nanjing city were polluted by heavy metals, among which Cd showed the notable character. Soils in roadside showed high concentrations of heavy metals and soils in farmland showed relatively low concentrations. Roots, stalks and leaves of vegetables absorbed the different metal concentrations from soils. The metal concentrations in roots for most vegetables were higher than in stalks and leaves. But some vegetables with large leaves accumulated higher metals. The transfer coefficients (plant/soil) displayed the vegetables absorbed more Zn, Cu and Cd. Increased heavy metals in soil increased the accumulation in vegetables.
