Dehydrogenase activity in sewage sludge treated with different sources of cadmium

Pollutants present in sewage sludge, like heavy metals, affect its biological characteristics and also sol biological characteristics. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of the contamination of sewage sludge with different sources of Cd on the waste dehydrogenase activity. Sewage sludge was treated with four sources of Cd CdCl<,2>, CdSO<,4>, Cd(NO<,3>)<,2> and metallic Cd to get 60mg· kg<-1> (dry basis) and incubated for 58 days. Immediately after Cd incorporation (time 0) and after 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 43 and 58 days after incubation started, waste samples were analyzed for dehydogenase activity. At the end of the experiment Cd extracted by Mehlich I extractor was determined. The data permitted us to conclude that high concentrations of Cd, causing by the addition of different sources of the metal causes decrease in the enzyme activity depending on the Cd solubilization, but that low concentrations may be an activator of the enzyme.
