Concentration of selected heavy metals in soils of north central Iran

No information is currently available on heavy metal concentrations in soils of north central Iran. The objective of this research was to evaluate the total content of Pb, Ni and Zn, in soils around the city of Qom, Iran. A total of 189 composite surface soil samples (0-10cm) were taken from an area of about 900km<,2> in Qom province. There were significant differences in total concen trations of Pb, Zn, and Ni among different land uses. Zinc and Pb concentration was much higher in urban areas than in agricultural and uncultivated lands. Furthermore, the total Ni in agricultural lands was higher than that of urban and uncultivated areas. The mean concentration of the HMs studied is still within the acceptable range, although there are areas in all the three land uses where higher concentrations of heavy metals occur. No significant relationship was found between the total concentration of heavy metals and the soil pH and/or EC. The results showed that industrial, urban and agricultural activities have significantly increased the concentration of Pb, Zn and Ni in surface soils of the study region.
