Local knowledge about heavy metal contamination in periurban vegetable production systems in southeast Asia
Local knowledge about pollution in peri-urban vegetable production systems in three Southeast Asian cities was acquired using knowledge based systems methods. Farmers had sophisticated understanding of how polluted water affected their own health and the growth and health of their vegetables. In Vietnam, farmers downstream of Hanoi, principally growing aquatic crops, classified river water in terms of colour, smell and surface foam. Bayesian models of how they traded-off its value as a fertiliser with potential health risks were developed. Chinese farmers in Wuxi, where rapid industrialisation cutting through the landscape had led to farmers being largely reliant on river-fed irrigation channels, also relate water colour to contaminant effects on crops. In contrast, in Nanjing farmers still used a network of rain-fed ponds to buffer irrigation requirements from rivers and so were able to mitigate effects of polluted water. In both countries, while people were aware of industrial pollution, they were more concerned about health risks associated with pesticides and, to a lesser extent, inorganic fertiliser and did not have explicit knowledge of heavy metal contamination. There was some evidence of heavy use of animal manure acidifying soil and leading to enhanced uptake of Cd and Pb by vegetables in China. Decision support tools to assist farmers in managing soil amendments to reduce nutrient leaching (FERTIMIZE) and acidification (HEAVY) are being piloted.
