Capacity of hybrid aspen (Populus tremula x tremuloides) to accumulate metals from contaminated soil

Three-year-old hybrid aspen (Populus tremula x tremuloides) trees were planted into heavy metal contaminated soil in order to monitor metal uptake during two years. The concentrations of nine metals and metalloids (Al, As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Ni, Zn, V) were analyzed from the soil around each tree as well as from the roots, sterns and leaves of ten trees. Overall, the site was moderately contaminated with heavy metals, but there were botspots with high levels of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, V and Zn. The trees accu mulated Zn and Cd mainly in the leaves, whereas Al, Cu and V mostly remained in the roots. The highest metal concentrations found from the leaves were: 35mg/kg Cd, 2200mg/kg Zn and 400mg/kg Al, Overall, hybrid aspen accumulated Cd and Zn very efficiently into the shoots, with a bioaccumulation factor (metal concentration in leaves and stems vs. metal concentration in soil) of 4.6 and 3.0, respectively. Moreover, Cd and Zn bioaccumnlation factors showed a strong correlation, implying that the transport of these metls may share some common mechanisms. No growth reduction was seen in the trees grown in botspots compared to those growing in the moderately contaminated soils. This study shows that P. tremula x tremuloides has a potential to withstand relatively high, mixed metal concentrations. Moreover, hybrid aspen is able to concentrate high levels of Zn and Cd in the above-ground tissues, making it a suitable candidate for phytoextraction studies.
