French bread wheat cultivars differ in grain Cd concentrations
Grain Cd concentration of French bread wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum L.) was studied over a 3-year period at two field experiments in France. Soil Cd originates from geogenic origin, long-range atmospheric depositions and fertilizers in both fields. At site A, differences between minimal and maximum grain Cd values varied by a factor 2 to 4.5 depending on year; at site B, differential responses of cultivars varied by a factor 2 to 4. Only one 1st order interaction, i.e. site×year, was significant. (cultivar×year) and (cultivar×site) interactions were not significant, thus grain Cd concentration was explained by cultivars. Comparison of mean values resulted in 3 cultivar groups. Accurate modelling Cd in French bread wheat grain should account for cultivar effect.
