Phytoremediation proposal for lead and cadmium-contaminated soils Murcia, SE Spain

Heavy metal contamination of soils is recognized to be a serious environmental problem. The major risks due to heavy metal pollution consist of leaching to groundwater and potential toxicity to plants. Phytoremediation is a promising technology that uses plants to clean up pollutants from the environment. The objective of this study is to evaluate remediation possibilities in soils contaminated by Cd and Pb. The study was carried out on four soils and four groundwater samples. Five plant species with a different trace element accumulation capacities and remediation potentials were also considered.
