Genetical and agronomical biofortification of cereals with Zn for better nutrition

Cereal grains are inherently very low in zinc (Zn) concentration and can not meet the daily Zn requirement of human-beings. This is a main reason for the widespread occurrence of Zn deficiency problem in human populations relied predominantly on cereal based foods as the main calorie and mineral source. When developed, Zn deficiency causes diverse of health complications in body such as impairments in brain development and immune system. Low Zn concentration in grain has also several adverse consequences during seed germination and seedling growth. Thus, improving cereal grains with Zn is, currently, a high priority research area. In this paper, genetical approaches and agronomy-related strategies will be discussed in terms of their effectiveness in improving grain Zn concentration.
