Analytical approaches to lead and cadmium speciation in plants

Speciation analysis is the analytical process of identifying and quantifying one or more chemical species of an element present in a sample. Speciation analysis requires methods that are both species- selective and extremely sensitive. For this reason we propose on-line coupling of separation and detection methods. We applied separation techniques such as size-exclusion and reversed-phase coupling with ICP- MS as detectors or ESI-MS/MS for molecular characterization. Using this technique allowed us to separate and identify phytochelatins and homophytochelatins in plant tissues incubated with Cd and Pb.
