The ability of coal combustion products (fly ash and bottom ash) to increase vegetative yields: independent source of nutrients and/or as Carriers of P after Loading
The feasibility of using coal ash (pulverized fuel ash, PFA) and bottom ash (BA) from power generation in Ontario, Canada as a carrier for P (BA only) and as independent sources of plant available macro and micro nutrients (both FA and BA) to enhance vegetative yields has been studied from 2002-present. The performance (potted tomato yield) of the PFA was tested with, or a gainst, compost, commercially available potting soil, and a local farm soil (Bryanston silt loam). PFA was mixed with compost and farm soil at various ratios to determine the effects of increasing ash content (0-30%, w/w) as well as at fixed proportions of ash with varying amounts of compost (5%-20%, w/w). End member trials of either ash or compost combined with soil at 5, 10 and 20% (w/w) were included. At fixed ratios of compost mixed with both soil and ash, the number of fruits, and shoot and root mass decreased with increasing ash addition. Optimum 3-component mixtures had the composition (w/w) soil (75%-85%): compost (1%-20%): ash (5%). However, mixtures of compost and ash alone outperformed all of the 3-component mixtures, commercial potting soil, and potting soil+fertilizer. A subsequent study tested the ability of P-loaded ash to supply P to potted corn trials. P-loaded ash was mixed with unloaded ash and sand. P-loaded ash made up 0. 6%-6% of the total ash addition, which was mixed (w/w) at ash (6%): sand (94%). Increasing proportions of P-loaded BA enhanced the root and shoot mass of corn (Zea mays) in all trials.
