Isotherms and kinetics of cesium and strontium sorption by selected subtropical and tropical soils around nuclear facilities

Little is known about the dynamics of cesium (Cs) and strontium (Sr) sorption by short-range order (SRO) organo-sesquioxide complexes in tropical and subtropical soil. Here, we determined isotherms and kinetics of Cs and Sr sorption by selected highly weathered subtropical and tropical soils in Taiwan. The amounts of pyrophosphate extractable Al (Alp) and Fe (Fep) were well correlated with Cs and Sr sorption capacities (Cs sorption: γ<2>= 0. 97, P<1. 0×10-4; Sr sorption:γ<2>=0. 82, P<1. 0×10-3) The activation energy (ΔEa <22. 7kJ·mol<1>) of Cs and Sr sorption determined from the temperature dependence of the reaction rate indicated that the limiting step was a diffusion-controlled process. The high values found for the sorption capacities suggest that short-range order (SRO) sesquioxides play an important role in the dynamics and fate of Cs and Sr in subtropical and tropical soils.
