Prototype of a GIS-based decision support system for the former semipalatinsk test site
A prototype of a spatial decision support system was developed for the territory adjacent to the Experimental Field site of the former Semipalatinsk test site. A dynamic model describing the migration of radionuclides in soil-plant-animal systems is its main feature. We used this tool to perform calculations and construct maps for the regions where the technogenic radionuclide contamination of livestock products exceeded the permissible levels. Radiation exposure estimates showed that there might be a serious hazard for the population living adjacent to the Experimental Field site because radionuclide concentrations in livestock products and additional radiation exposure were found to exceed permissible levels.
