Effect of K on the transport of Cs by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi
As potassium (K) is a chemical analog of caesium (Cs) there is a possibility that it could influence Cs transport by arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. The purpose of this study was therefore to determine the effect of K on Cs transport by AM fungi. An in vitro compartmented culture system, associating an AM fungus and an autotrophic plant was used. K was applied at different concentrations (0, 1, 10mM of K) in a compartment, also containing Cs, where only the AM hyphae could develop. The results showed that K could influence the transport of Cs by AM fungi. The increasing K concentrations reduced Cs transport by AM fungi. This effect was, however, much lower than expected, and support the possibility that Cs might, at least partially, be taken up by other transporters than the one of K.
