Discharge and transport of artificial radionuclides in the river Yenisei

Between 1958 and 1964 three nuclear reactors were put into operation 75km south of the city Krasnoyarsk in order to produce weapon grade plutonium. During the large inundations of the years 1966 and 1988 ponds with liquid radioactive waste situated close to the Yenisei were washed out. The first two direct flow reactors were shut down in 1992 while the third one which has a separated cooling cycle is still in operation. Sediments from different positions of the Yenisei were sampled and analyzed in order to reconstruct the discharges of artificial activity into the river Yenisei and to analyze the migration behavior of radionuclides as well into and within the sediments as along the river.
