The role of invertebrates in radionuclide turnover in belarus
The long-term analysis of accumulation of radionuclides by soil invertebrates was studied in the zone of radioactive contamination in different biogeocenoses. The invertebrates were found to play an important role in the redistribution of radionuclides in natural biogeocenoses. Radionuclide accumulation in the invertebrate body was a direct function of their concentration in the habitat. After the Chernobyl accident invertebrates were found to accumulate 10%- 20% of radionuclides from soil and litter.
