Measuring and modeling cobalt and uranium binding by humic acid

The aim of this study was to model the binding of uranyl (UO<,2><2+>) and cobalt (Co2+) ions to humic acid (HA) from the Gorleben test site in Germany. The experimental data were acquired using a recently developped Flux Donnan Membrane technique. Total cobalt concentrations ranged from 10<-8> to 10<-4> M at pH 4, 6, 8 and total uranyl ion concentrations from 10<-8> to 10<-4> M at pH 4. The NICA-Donnan model was used to predict the speciation of the radionuclides and their competition with alkaline earth ions such as magnesium, which can modify the speciation through competition.
