Simulation of <137>Cs and <90>Sr Behavior in grassland ecosystems of the semipalatinsk test site and prediction of radiation doses for the population

A mathematical model describing <137>Cs and <90>Sr behavior in grassland ecosystems of the Semipalatinsk Test Site was developed. Assessment of radioecological situation at the test site showed that the concentrations of these radionuclides in milk and meat of horses and sheep grazing at sites of high contamination may exceed permissible values. Furthermore, we calculated doses of internal and external exposure of the population resulting from the distribution of <137>Cs and <90>Sr in the grazing areas of horses and sheep. According to these calculations the highest doses are received by shepherds using the most contaminated areas near the technical site Bala pan as pasture.
