Uranium concentration in ground water of Bangladesh: A preliminary study using SSNTD
Solid state nuclear track detection technique has been used to estimate the uranium concentration in drinking water samples from various places in Bangladesh. The protocol developed by Gamboa et al. was used for the determination of uranium. A plastic material having alpha detection characteristics, called CR-39 was used in our present study. We collected 60 different water samples randomly from 30 different places in Bangladesh and found the average uranium concentration was 0.96±0.20ppb. About ten percent of the samples contain the concentration 38ppb to 42ppb, which is above the safety limit. From the preliminary data it is appeared that a significant fraction of tube well water is contaminated with uranium in addition to arsenic. Further study is necessary to map the contamination zone and it is also necessary to check whether there is any relationship between uranium and arsenic contamination.
