Behavior of U in soil-plant systems, with special emphasis on the difference between enriched and geogenic U

Behavior of enriched U released to the environment is possibly different from that of geogenic U because of the difference of the chemical form. In this study, U isotope ratio (<235>U/<238>U) was estimated for soil and plant samples collected around the uranium conversion facilities to determine the plant availability of the enriched U. Different chemical extractions with different solutions were also applied, in order to obtain information about the chemical form of U in soil. The results suggest that the enriched U added to the soil was more soluble (more plant available) compared to the geogenic U originally contained in the soil.
