Role of aquatic plants in migration of artificial radionuclides in the Yenisei River

The study addresses the accumulation of artificial radionuclides by aquatic plant community of the Yenisei River in the territory contaminated by radioactive wastes of a nuclear plant. The activity of artificial isotopes in the biomass of plant species ranged from 72% (5km downstream of the Mining-and-Chemical Combine (MCC)) to 8% (250km downstream of the MCC) of the total activity of radionuclides. The deep-water plant community contained from 81% to 95% of artificial radionuclides accumulated by the community of aquatic plants. The integral accumulation of artificial radionuclides for the summer vegetation season ranged from 7 to 180 Bq/m<2> at different sampling sites. We estimated the distribution of radionuclides in the biomass of aquatic plants. As a result of the treatment of dry biomass of aquatic plants with 1M HCl, the radionuclides were divided into weakly bound (extracellular and intracellular) and strongly bound (incorporated) in the biomass.
