Will the harvesting of drained peatland forests mobilize mercury?

Much of the 4.5 Mha of drained peatland forests in Finland are approaching harvesting. We describe the results from a pilot study for a planned project aimed at assessing the risk of harvesting peatland forests in small catchments on the mobilization of Hg and loading to surface waters. Concentrations of Hg in the upper 50cm of peat reached 0.25mg·kg<-1> in catchments underlain by black shale (Hg-rich) but where 10 times less in a catchment underlain by granodiorite. The pre-harvesting concentrations of total Hg in the ditch waters ranged from 2.4 to 7.3ng·L<-1> and those of methyl Hg from 0.12-1.20ng·L<-1>. Harvesting is expected to result in a considerable release of Hg from the surface peat layer and loading to ditch waters, especially in the case of catchments underlain by black shales.
