Adsorption characteristics of Cu<2+> and Cd<2+> on soil colloids and minerals as influenced by heavy metal-resistant bacterium enterobacter aerogenes

The potential of bacteria in the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated environments has received increasing attention over the past years. The adsorption kinetics and binding mechanisms of two metals on soil colloidal components as influenced by a heavy metal-resistant bacterium were investigated. Different impacts of bacteria on the adsorption kinetics of Cu<2+> and Cd<2+> by soil colloids were observed. The adsorption rate and accumulated adsorption quantity of Cd<2+> for the soil colloid composites were much greater than the pure soil colloid system. FTIR spectrum shows that the presence of bacterial cells increased the interaction between Cu<2+> and the free hydroxyl group on goethite surface. The reaction between Cd<2+> and the hydrate hydroxyl group on goethite surface was strengthensd in the presence of bacteria. Bacterial cells enhanced the interactions of hydroxyl group on kaolinite with Cu<2+> ions.
