Effects of submerging and organic matter addition on Cd availability in paddy soils

We incubated three types of soils to study the variation of soil pH, Eh, exchangeable Cd and their relationships under different redox conditions. The results showed that after submerging the exchangeable Cd of the red soil and fluvo-aquic soil decreased while that of the yellow brown soil increased. With addition of organic matter, soil flooding caused the exchangeable Cd to drop rapidly to a very low level for red soil, kept stable for fluvo-aquic soil and increased for yellow brown soil. The findings indicated that Cd availability under reductive conditions was closely related to the soil properties such as pH and Eh.
