Study of physical, chemical and biological soil parameters in the mine area Rambla El Beal (Murcia, Spain)
An experimental field work was performed in Rambla El Peal (Cartagena, Spain) to study microbiological activity and soil pa-rameter changes along this system The study area is located in one of the oldest Spanish mining sites known before Roman times. In order to study changes in soil parameters along the rambla system, four representative sampling points were selected. In each one, a collection of sediments up to 6 m depth was performed by drilling and divided in subsamples. Several physical and chemical parameters were measured, as well as microbiological activity. Strong changes in some parameters have been found along the system and in depth gradient, these changes suggest a complex geochemical process related to the tailings dynamic and envi-ronmental parameters. High levels of heavy metals (As, Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn) were mostly found in the lower parts, while microbio-logical activity was reported to be strongly inhibited.
