Chemical partitioning and assessment of heavy metal bioavailability for flax grown on tannery sludge amended soil

The study was designed to evaluate the chemical partitioning of metal and its accumulation by the flax (Linum usitatissimum L. (var. Garima)) grown on tannery sludge amended soil. For metal bioavailability test, several single extractants were used and their extraction capacity was found in the order;EDTA>DTPA>NH<,4>NO<,3>>CaCl<,2>>NaNO<,3>. Metals partitioning data showed K, Cr and Ni were mostly abundant with residual fraction;however, Na and Cd were bound with carbonate fraction. The pH and organic matter showed significant correlation with different fraction of most of the tested metals. However, principal component analysis (PCA) analysis based on different fractions of metals showed organic matter bounded fraction grouped differently from rest of the fractions. These analyses indicated organic matter play an important role in this study. PCA analysis also showed a closer association among the Fe, Cr, Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu, Ni and Mn extracted with single extractants, however, Cr, Zn, Pb and Cd showed stronger association when partitioning with sequential extraction protocol. Accumulation of essential metals in the plants was found better in comparison to toxic metals. Translocation of the most of the studied metals was restricted in lower parts of the plants. Correlation analysis between accumulation of metals in the plants and metal extracted with different extractants, showed following order NH<,4>NO<,3>>CaCl<,2>>EDTA>DTPA>NaNO <,3>. The analysis showed that the linseed is an economically important plant and suitable to grow on tannery waste contaminated sites for its use as fiber.
