Response of ten winter wheat cultivars to copper application

The aim of the study was to verify whether new winter wheat cultivars, intensively and commonly grown in Poland differ significantly in Cu uptake efficiency. Winter wheat is considered as one of the most sensitive agronomic species to Cu deficiency. Copper fertilization seems to be a necessary treatment as large deficits of this element have been observed in the recent years in Poland. In 2003-2006 four field trials were carried out in south-west Poland to determine the effect of foliar Cu application at the rate of 305 g · ha<1> on 10 winter wheat cultivars. Tested winter wheat cultivars differed significantly in their Cu efficiency. Having the same, medium content of Cu in soil, three out of the ten cultivars responded to foliar Cu application with a 10%-16% increase in yields, two with 8%-11% decrease and five did not respond to Cu fertilization.
