Using comet assay of plant nuclei to assess the genotoxicity of cadmium
The effects of operation conditions on the comet assay for the detection of DNA damages in plant nuclei were investigated and the application of comet assay in assessing cadmium (Cd) and mixture of Cd and atrazine genotoxicity was studied. The DNA damages in plant nuclei induced by Cd and chemical mixture were detected using comet assay. A dose-dependent increase in DNA damages after Cd treatment was found with increasing Cd concentrations in the growth medium. However the addition of atrazine decrease the genotoxicity of Cd, which may result from the formation of a Cd2 (ATR) compound.
