Assessment of metal contamination in soils: Portuguese vs. EU policy and practices
This work provides an overview of the European and Portuguese soil protection regulatory frameworks, and an analysis of data availability concerning sources of soil metal contamination and contaminated sites in Portugal. It concludes that a streamlined strategy for soil contamination assessment and remediation is needed in Portugal, in order to support policy actions, particularly those associated with the development of new European Union (EU) soil policies. Policy-relevant data on the identification and assessment of contaminated sites and for setting up priorities and a strategy for remediation require the selection and use of comparable indicators and methods and must be part of an EU integrated approach.
