Potential biological toxicity assessment using heavy metals from surface sediments based sediment quality guidelines

The contaminations of Hg, Pb, Cd, Zn, and Cu to the surface sediments of Wuli River, Cishan River, and Lianshan River in Huludao City, Northeast of China were assessed with the application of two different sets of SQG (ERL/ERM and TEL/PEL) in dices, which were developed from a biological effects database for sediments (BEDS) for potential adverse biological impacts. The results showed that the adverse effects in all the surface sediments of Wuli River could be expected to occur frequently. There were little potential adverse biological impacts in upstream of Cishan River, but the potential adverse biological impacts in the downstream, could be observed adverse effects are expected to occur frequently, exceeding Wuli River and Lianshan River seriously. In conclusion, the biological toxicity risk can be well evaluated by SQGs (BEDS).
