Variation of glutathione and glutathione S-transferase in rice under Cd stress
A hydroponic experiment was conducted to assess the effect of Cd on rice growth, glutathione (GSH) and glutathione S-transferase (GDT) activity in rice shoot and root tissues. The results showed that rice growth was severely depressed when solution Cd was higher than lOmg/L. The GSH content and GST activity in rice shoot increased with Cd concentration. The content of GSH and GST activity was considerably higher in rice root, indicating that the detoxification process was more pronounced. The variation of GST activity differed for shoot and root tissues, probably because the identities and functions of GST isozymes were divergent. Statistically significant relationships were observed between Cd exposure and rice response, suggesting that GSH content and GST activity may be good indicators for Cd toxicity.
