Arsenic uptaken by the aquatic fern, Azolla: A preliminary study

Two strains of Azolla, A. filiculoides and A. microphylla were chosen tO investigate the potential ability of arsenic (As) uptake. Uptake kinetics study showed that A. microphylla had 10-fold higher V<,max> than A.filiculoides, and it can accumulate much higher concentration of As. A large proportion of As taken up was partitioned into the roots. Based on this study, A. microphylla has a high As uptake ability, and may be potentially used for phytoremediation of contalllinated water.
