Phenolic compounds play multiple beneficial effects in plant iron acquisition

Red clover is a typical strategy II plant in response to Fe deficiency. When suffered from Fe deficiency, large quantity of phenolics was secreted from the roots. The secreted phenolics selectively influenced the soil microbial community, and the modified soil microbial community probably favored the Fe acquisition from the soil through siderophore and auxin production. In hydroponic culture, when the secreted phnolics was continuously removed by a phenolics trapping systemthe reutilization of root apoplastic Fe was almost inhibited, indicating the indispensable role played in facilitating root apoplastic Fe remobilization. Moreover, the phenolics accumulation in the Fe deficient root might also related to enhanced ferric chelate reductase activity and morphology changes by the link of the observed inhibition of IAA oxidase in the Fe deficient root and increased IAA level.
