Cadmium accumulation in the edible parts of various cultivars of radish and carrot

Cadmium accumulation among 12 cultivars of radish (Raphanus sativus L. ) and 10 cultivars of carrot (Daucus corota var. sativa) was studieel in a Cd- contaminated soil. There were significant differences in concentration of CA among the cultivars of radish and carrot. Concentration of Cd in the edible parts of radish and carrot ranged from 0.04 to 0.14 and 0.14 to 0.19mg·kg<-1> fresh weight, respectively. All cultivars of carrot and one-third of the radish cultivars exceeded the maximum allowable limit of Cd (0.1mg·kg<-1> fresh weight). It is possible to select cultivars of radish to avoid excessive accumulation of Cd in the edible part when the vegetable is grown on Cd-contaminated soils.
