Arsenic and cadmium mass balance of cropland soils
We developed a Windows-based mass balance model that accounts for the interactive processes governing the reactions of trace elements in soils, and subsequent removal from the soil profile by the crop harvest and leaching. The model is able to assess the environmental fate and transport of trace elements in cropland soils. Outcomes of model simulations show that the Cd level is expected to buildup in the plow layer over time while the As is slowly depleted from the plow layer over time under the typical cropping practices.
