Distributions of arsenic species in sediment-water interface of Hukou, in Poyang Lake, China

Arsenic species corresponding to arsenite, arsenate, and organic arsenic were measured in the porewaters collected at Hukou, where through a 1km long channel the water in Poyang Lake is emptied into the Yangtze River. Distributions of dissolved arsenic species of arsenite As (Ⅲ, arsenate As (Ⅴ) and organic arsenic (As-org) were obtained in porewaters. The sedimentary profiles of total arsenic, arsenic species bound to Fe-Mn oxyhydroxides and to organic matters were also determined in different extractable fractions. Results indicated that in summer season the concentrations of total dissolved arsenic in sediments were significantly different with that in winter. Seasonal profiles of dissolved arsenic suggested downward and upward diffusion.
