Biogeochemical changes in diphenylarsinic acid in Japanese agricultural soils

We investigated the biogeochemical changes in diphenylarsinic acid (DPAA) in two types of agricultural soils under flooded or upland conditions in an incubation study. The results were as follows: 1) DPAA in the flooded soil can change into methyldiphenylarsine oxide (MDPAO) by methylation. 2) Under flooded conditions, part of DPAA can change into phenylarsonic acid (PAA) which is subsequently changed through methylphenylarsinic acid (MPAA) to dimethylphenylarsine oxide (DMPAO). 3) The concentration of DPAA applied to these two soils clearly decreased after 12 weeks incubation, indicating that most of DPAA might be aged in the soil or degassed to the air during the incubation period.
