Effect of increasing amounts of goethite, ferrihydrite and allophane on plant As and P uptake

A compartment system approach was used to evaluate whether plants increase As mobility and uptake in the attempt to mobilise P from soil mineral phases differing in their sorption capacity and affinity to phosphate and arsenate. With increasing amounts of goethite and ferrihydrite P to As ratio in soil solution increased while a decrease was observed with increasing amounts of allophane. Plant induced mobilisation of As was not observed in any of the treatments while mobilisation of P occurred in the treatment receiving 1 g·kg<-1> goethite. The differences in soil solution P to AS ratio and P mobilisation were reflected in plant AS and P uptake.
