Initial release of barium from fly ash during AMD treatment

The effect of adding acidic mine waste leaching water to an alkaline fly ash was studied during twenty days. The experiment simulated a capacity test of the ash, which was continuously added acidic water at increasing liquid-to-solid ratios. This part of the study focuses on the behaviour of barium, strontium, chromium and molybdenum at high pHs (pH 12.4-12.8). An extreme increase in barium concentration was observed at high pH, which was also seen for strontium and aluminium, as well as a simultaneous reduction in concentration of molybdenum and chromium in solution. The decline of chromium and molybdenum is probably due to incorporation into hydrocalumite and the loss of barium due to dissolution of the aluminium silicate mineral celsian.
