Redox processes during flow analysis of selenium species by ICP-AFS

In this preliminary study, we investigated the sensitivity and selectivity of the hydride method where Se (IV) hydride is transferred by argon to the ICP plasma. On-line pre-reduction of Se (VI) to Se (IV) was also studied as part of speciation investigation. A number of reductants were selected, with thiourea found the most efficient under the selected conditions (reduction time for 2.5 minutes and heating at 80℃). Thiourea had a further advantage in eliminating interference from various metal species. The efficiency of on-line reaction redox techniques for Se species in the concentration range 1-10 ppb was then investigated using ICP-AES detection.
